Toyota Tacoma Owners Beware: Lawsuit Claims Faulty Paint Job Leads to Peeling and Fading

California Man Files Class Action Over Alleged Paint Defects on Popular Truck

Despite its reputation for toughness, the Toyota Tacoma might have a hidden weakness: its paint. A new class-action lawsuit accuses Toyota of using a defective clear coat that prematurely peels, oxidizes, and fades on Tacoma trucks.

More Than Just One Owner Affected

The lawsuit, filed by California resident Mark Greif, alleges that the paint job issue affects numerous Tacoma owners. What’s worse, Greif claims Toyota is aware of the problem yet refuses to take responsibility.

Paying a Premium for Subpar Paint?

Greif argues that Toyota’s advertising misleads consumers. The lawsuit claims Toyota emphasizes the Tacoma’s durability, while the paint job allegedly fails prematurely, oxidizing and losing its shine.

“Consumers rely on a company’s advertising,” Greif states. “Toyota inflates the value of its Tacomas with false claims about their build quality and resilience. Drivers like myself pay a premium based on these claims,” he continues, “but wouldn’t have if they knew the reality of the paint situation.”

Understanding the Problem: Oxidation Explained

The lawsuit explains that oxidation is a chemical reaction caused by heat and oxygen exposure that breaks down vehicle paint. Essentially, it’s a form of corrosion that dries out the paint by removing its oil content.

This oxidation dulls and fades the paint, giving it a chalky appearance. Ultimately, it deteriorates the clear coat, potentially leading to permanent paint damage and exposing the vehicle body to rust.

Greif Isn’t Alone: Widespread Reports of Paint Issues

Greif’s lawsuit highlights complaints from other Tacoma owners regarding oxidation and Toyota’s handling of the problem. Online forums like TacomaWorld.com, CarComplaints.com, and Reddit.com show numerous owners reporting paint damage and subsequent repair costs ranging from $500 to $6,000, or potentially even higher.

Not Toyota’s First Legal Challenge

Greif’s lawsuit isn’t the only legal trouble Toyota has faced recently. Here are some additional legal issues mentioned in the lawsuit:

  • Misrepresenting Maintenance Plan Savings: A separate California class action lawsuit alleges Toyota inflated the value of its maintenance plans.
  • Defective Airbags: Another lawsuit resulted in a $78.5 million settlement for faulty airbags that could malfunction in crashes.
  • Improper Loan Add-Ons: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Toyota to pay $60 million for selling unnecessary loan add-ons and making it difficult for borrowers to cancel them.

Seeking Justice for Tacoma Owners Nationwide

Greif’s lawsuit seeks to represent all Tacoma owners nationwide who have experienced paint job issues. The lawsuit alleges violations of California consumer protection laws and breach of warranty.
